Rowdy Gaines

Swim Clinician

The pictures below are from a private clinic conducted for a club team in Florida. Fifty five swimmers age 6-20 participated in the 3 hour session. About an hour and forty five minutes was spent in water and the remaining time spent watching a tape of Rowdy's 1984 Olympic Gold Medal swim, a motivational talk by Rowdy, question & answer, and pictures & autographs.

In the six years we have been putting on the Rowdy Gaines Swimming Series, we have never simply showed up in a town and hoped to fill the session. All our clinics are by invitation from a swim team. The most popular format is a one day session that features 1 or 2 swim clinic sessions (ideal for teams with 40-100 members). However, we have conducted two day clinics with the emphasis of individual video tape sessions (we have done this for club, collegiate and masters teams). One of the more interesting clinics was a for a New York summer camp. They wanted ten one-hour clinics over a two day period with 500 campers.

The one day clinic session traditionally lasts between 2-3 hours (depending on the team goals) and covers specific drills/technique and emphasis on starts/turns. Oh yeah, Rowdy mixes in a lot of fun for the swimmers as well. Rowdy is in the water the entire clinic and has one of the most natural and fluid strokes you will ever see.

Rowdy demonstrates to a group of swimmers the importance of feel for the water and showing drills the swimmers can practice.

Rowdy's a big Tiger Woods fan. So how does a guy as little as Tiger hit the ball so far? Hip power is one ingredient. The same is true in swimming. Here, Rowdy is showing off the abs and demonstrating the importance of hip rotation.

Coaches, do you sometimes feel like it's a broken record, "elbows, elbows, elbows?" Sometimes they just need to hear it from a different person. Rowdy's goal is to reinforce what you teach everyday to your swimmers.

Head position is so critical in swimming and your head weighs as much as a bowling ball. In the wrong position, it will throw off every area of your swimming.

You can win or lose a race on the turns. Ever wonder why the 25 meter short course world record is 2-3 seconds faster than the 50 meter world record? They are both 100 meters. It's because in short course meters, you have 2 more turns. You will never swim faster than you do off a turn. Rowdy dedicates time for each clinic to turns. It's that important.

Always a big hit is Rowdy's honest and open question & answer session with swimmers, parents, and coaches. Here he passes around one of his Gold medals. Swimming has done so much for Rowdy and he really enjoys giving back to the kids.

Every clinic session includes a photo opportunity. And Rowdy brings plenty of Speedo 8 x 10 color autographs for the swimmers.

Each swim clinic is taylored to meet the goals and objectives of your team. If you'd like to reserve Rowdy and cost is the only factor, call us. We have helped several clubs creatively find the funds to bring in Rowdy. Your swimmers and parents will thank you.
